What’s the book about? Why did I write it?
My book, Granny Square Flair was born from my joyful exploration of yarn. I love nothing more than sitting down with some yarn and my hook to design new granny squares. I’ve gathered fifty of my original designs in this book, taking the humble granny square in exciting new directions.
My hope is that the book will become a treasured resource that crocheters will use to create their own crochet masterpieces with their own personality firmly shown. I am all about empowering people to take what they learn and make what makes them happy.
While not a “learn to crochet” book, I have provided a lot of hints and tips to create beautiful, seamless crochet and if the basics are known, any adventurous crocheter will be able to use the patterns in the book. A glossary explaining all stitches and symbols used in the book is included.
You will see that all of the 50 patterns are shown in a neutral cream colour for the main photo. Seeing a pattern in this way leaves it open to become whats suits the reader. Showing a particular colour way can subconsciously limit your vision of what it can become. If you dislike green, for example, and see a pattern for the first time in greens, you may not look at it seriously as a potential addition to your project. Most of us have a preference for particular colours. Showing all the patterns in a neutral colour lets us focus on the pattern and stitches, allowing more scope for creativity with colour. To show how different colours can change the whole look of a pattern, at least 2 alternative colour options are shown for all 50 patterns.
About the Author
Shelley Husband is an Australian crochet designer and crochet teacher living on the south west coast of Victoria with her hubby and teenager in a tiny dot of a town by the ocean. Her two older children have left the nest and are spreading their own crafty and arty wings out in the world.
Shelley has crafted most of her life, trying “all of the crafts” over the years. These days, she spends most of her time with a crochet hook in hand. Having discovered a natural knack for crochet about six years ago after a break of a few decades, she hasn’t looked back, creating hundreds of Granny Square patterns.
Shelley loves nothing more than designing new patterns aiming to extend her own and our crochet skills, gently challenging and encouraging us to create timeless, classic pieces sure to be admired and appreciated.
Seamless crochet is a real passion and she has many tips and tricks to make our crochet look the best it possibly can, using techniques she has combined and tweaked over the years.
When not designing crochet, you can find Shelley teaching crochet in workshops around Victoria and beyond. For those who can’t make a workshop in person, she teaches worldwide via her annual Crochet-A-Long projects through her blog and YouTube channel. There’s no doubting Shelley’s passion for all things crochet.
You can find Shelley online at www.shelleyhusbandcrochet.com and on most social media channels as spincushions.
