Hi folks 🙂 Happy New Year!
So this year I’m running a new monthly crochet along (Beyond the Granny) to take you beyond the granny square. But what if you don’t know how to do that? Well, look no further! I’ve created a very detailed, step by step (with pics at every step) tutorial to help you start the joy that is crochet.

Yay!
I’ve created the tutorial with going beyond the granny in mind, so there are a lot of tips and tricks in there that you will be able to use in the future, once you master the good old granny. Even reading patterns.
Just to make things a little confusing, in this big wide world of ours there is a bit of inconsistency with terminology. If you are in the US, the stitches have different names to the UK. In Australia, we generally use UK terms (also known as International terms).
So I have a version in both UK/International terms and in US terms. It doesn’t matter where you are – you can choose to learn either way. Just know that most patterns you’ll find on the internet are in US terms. It is an easy matter to translate to UK though, so as I said it really doesn’t matter which version you choose.

UPDATE : I have created a short video to help with the false tr (dc US) discussed in the Alternatives – you can find it here.
Now this tutorial is LONG. I have provided 20 pages of instruction for you plus 5 pages of optional alternatives. Please consider being kind to the planet and using the tute digitally rather than printing it. That way you can enlarge the pics if you want a real close up of a step. The alternatives PDF has links to more info so being able to click a link will be much more user friendly. 🙂

I want you know that your first few granny squares will probably be a bit loose and wonky. Don’t be hard on yourself! It’s ok. It’s how it is for most folks. Persevere and you will soon find that your stitches become tighter and more consistent. Don’t be scared to undo your work (it’s called “frogging” because you rip it, rip it out – ribbit ribbit) It’s quite fun sometimes. If you make a mistake, just undo it to where you were right and go again.

Keep crocheting until you are able to make squares that are all the same size and you don’t need to refer to the tute anymore. That’s when you’ll know you’re ready to start a project.
But what about changing colours? I’ve explored some of the options available in this post.
So off you go – go get your granny on! (that sounds very, very wrong!)

That’s great Shelley.. So much work put into it thank you.
For this project how many should we try to make each month and what size each??
This is not part of the CAL as yet Sandy. Just a help for those who don’t know how to do the granny. 🙂
I’ll be posting the first “Beyond the Granny” that will use this as its base but with a couple of small differences. I’ll explain how many & sizes & so on soon 🙂
Hahaha I’m so excited to start I’m too eager!
Can’t wait!
Thanks
Thanks for all your effort will definitely be following your tute
Excellent – thanks Jennifer 🙂 Hope its all good 🙂
I am a new beginner its and I’m looking forward to learn alot from you
Great stuff! I hope you enjoy your crochet adventures!
Wow, what detail! Excellent tutorials!
I enjoyed paging through, even though I’ve been crocheting for many years!
The chainless start
I will try again with the help of your great photos. I have tried before, but need some more practice…;)
Looking forward to all your great posts, tutorials & inspiration!
Oh thank you Rene 🙂 Glad you enjoyed it. I was a bit worried experienced folks might find it a bit too slow going. I’ll do my best to keep up the interest factor. 🙂
thank you Shelley for going to so much trouble for this! I will be doing this tomorrow, I am determined to do a granny no matter what!! thank you xx
My pleasure Linda 🙂 Good luck with it. 🙂
Hi Shelly, Thank you, i am working on the alternatives for granny square, I am finding step 2 of the false tr difficult. (Getting the Twist) i won’t be discouraged, i”ll keep trying using the video as well. Also i revisited double magic circle (Kim’s video) found i was doing it wrong. Was not putting the wool around my fingers correctly. So easy.
Jen.
You can do the false tr without that twist if you like. Not a huge difference to the end result 🙂 Glad you’re trying new things 🙂
thanks may be easier, i’ll give that a go.
I’m having trouble with Ending a Granny Round with a ch 1, join with sc in the Crochet Alternatives for Granny Squares US Terms by Shelley Husband 2014[smallpdf.com]. I get the sc part and the next two dc go in the chain 2 space it looks like but then where does the next st go? Help!
OK so the next round’s dc stitches are worked over the sc you joined with. Starting with the 3 ch or the false dc, your next 2 dc are over the sc which is taking the place of the 2 ch. This makes your first 3 dc shell. Then you move on to the next 3 dc shell in the next spot – corner or side as per the original pattern. It’s only the beginning and end of each round that is slightly different. When you work your way around and back to the start, you work your last 3 dc shell into the same space as your first that was worked over the joining sc and then ch 1 & join with sc again.
That’s a lot of words – I hope not too many and that they help a little.
I would like to know how you crocheted the squares together.
There are many, many ways to join granny squares. This is the method I use most often.
